  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">UNITED ARAB EMIRATES</span><span class="style42">Official name:</span><span class="style13"> Al-Imarat AlΓÇÿArabiya Al-Muttahida (The United Arab Emirates)</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, Arab League, OPEC, GCC</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">83600 km2 (32280 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">1990000 (1993 est)Capital: </span><span class="style42">Abu Dhabi 363000 (1989 est)Other major cities:</span><span class="style13"> Dubai 585000, alΓÇÖAyn 176000, Sharjah 125000 (1989 est)</span><span class="style42">Languages: </span><span class="style13">Arabic (official; 20-25%); English (commercial); various languages of the Indian subcontinent (70%); Iranian</span><span class="style42">Religion: </span><span class="style13">Sunni Islam (official; majority)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The hereditary absolute rulers of the seven emirates ΓÇô Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, Umm al-Qaiwain ΓÇô form the Supreme Council of Rulers. The Supreme Council elects one of its members as President, who appoints a Prime Minister and Council of Ministers.  The Supreme Council also appoints a 40-member advisory Federal National Council for two years. There are no political parties.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The country is a low-lying desert except in the east, where the Jajar Mountains rise to 1189 m (3901 ft). </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">Summer temperatures exceed 40 ┬░C (104 ┬░F); winter temperatures are milder. Rainfall is very low.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Based upon the export of offshore and onshore reserves of petroleum and natural gas, the country has one of the highest standards of living in the world. Dry docks, fertilizer factories, commercial banking interests, international airports and an entrep├┤t trade have been developed. Immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and Iran form the majority of the labor force. Agriculture is confined to oases and a few coastal sites irrigated by desalinated water. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Dirham.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">The Gulf tribes were converted to Islam in the 7th century ad. When the Portuguese occupied some ports in the 16th century, the region was prosperous, but economic decline followed, coinciding with the (Turkish) Ottoman conquest. A political vacuum in the mid-18th century was filled by the British, who saw the region as a link in the trade route to India. Treaties (ΓÇÿtrucesΓÇÖ) were signed with local rulers during the 19th century, bringing the Trucial States under British protection. In 1958 oil was discovered in Abu Dhabi. When the British withdrew in 1971 the Trucial States formed the United Arab Emirates.#</span></text>
